Age
Weaning a child off a dummy really depends on the little one, but most experts reckon the sweet spot is somewhere around 12 to 18 months. It's a good window to start cutting back and avoid them getting too attached. Take it steady and gradually, and most kids will let go of it without too much of a fuss.
Weaning from a pacifier is generally recommended between 2 and 4 years old, when the child begins to develop their independence. Gradual pacifier weaning can help minimize stress for the child and facilitate this important transition. Remember that every child is unique, so observe for signs of readiness for pacifier weaning.
It is recommended to accustom the child to the pacifier until the age of 2 to 3 years, when pacifier weaning can begin. Gradual weaning helps reduce pacifier dependence and avoid impacts on dental and language development. Be sure to replace the pacifier with other comfort methods during this transition period.
Most experts recommend letting your little one have their dummy up until around 2 to 3 years old. That said, every child is different, so weaning should be taken gradually to avoid unnecessary stress — always follow your child's lead.
The key is to take it slowly. Start by limiting dummy use to certain times of the day, and gradually phase it out from there. Having a few comforting alternatives on hand can also go a long way in making the transition smoother.
Most experts recommend weaning before the age of 3 to prevent any impact on teeth and overall development. Every child is different though, so there's no one-size-fits-all approach — just keep it gentle and go at their own pace.
It's never too late to break a habit. After the age of 6, weaning works just the same way. That said, from an orthodontic standpoint, any tooth misalignment is less likely to correct itself naturally at that age. An orthodontic check-up may be worth considering.
Clipp® is recommended from the age of 2, ideally around 3, which tends to be the best window for dummy weaning. For more information, check out the article When should you think about stopping the dummy?
Manufacturer
Clipp® was invented by Arnaud Biezanek, a father of two and an orthodontics professional with over 20 years of experience. Since 2002, he has produced thousands of custom devices each year for dental practices and hospitals across France and beyond. The dummy itself was sourced from a German manufacturer with a solid reputation dating back to the 1980s, and is fully BPA-free and compliant with current standards.
The product
Generally, we recommend 2 to 3 Clipp pacifiers per child: one main and one or two spares. This allows you to leave them in key places (home, other parent, nanny) without having to constantly carry the same one. Beyond that, it's not necessary for weaning.
Having multiple Clipp pacifiers does not disrupt weaning if the rules remain clear: Clipp is the only pacifier allowed. On the contrary, it can reassure the child, who knows that they will always find their Clipp pacifier at home, with the other parent, or with the nanny, without reverting back.
Ordering multiple kits offers real convenience in your daily life: you can leave one Clipp teat at home and another with the nanny or grandparents. Plus, with two kits or more ordered, shipping is free in France, which allows you to plan ahead at a lower cost.
Gradually reducing the number of regular pacifiers is already an excellent first step. This helps your child get used to having fewer pacifiers even before starting with Clipp. Then, the goal is for them to only have one pacifier: their Clipp pacifier, a unique and reassuring landmark.
The Clipp® device is CE certified and complies with the applicable standard. The entire product is certified bisphenol A-free. The teat alone, which is the main component, is certified DIN EN 1400/2013 +A2: 2018 (Child use and care articles — Soothers for babies and young children — Safety requirements and test methods). DIN EN 71-3:2019 +A1:2021 (Safety of toys — Part 3: Migration of certain elements). REGULATION (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH) of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 December 2006, including its amendments. Recommendation of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment — Recommendation XV, silicone.
The Clipp® product is new and has not yet been the subject of scientific studies, but many articles are available online (M6, le Parisien, France 2, France 3, La maison des maternelles…).
Discover video testimonials from our users, and the numerous reviews from individuals and testimonials from healthcare professionals are very positive (written and video) and will certainly reassure you about both the effectiveness of the device and the innovative methodology. Clipp is rated between 4.9 and 5/5 on platforms such as Google, Consobaby, Mam’advisor or Facebook, and also won the silver medal at the Concours Lépine International Paris 2023, 3rd prize Fidéalis and the Mam’Advisor editorial award 2024.
The pacifier is designed for a 30 to 60-day weaning period. For hygiene and safety reasons, as well as from an orthodontic perspective, we recommend not extending weaning beyond 60 days. However, the child can keep the pacifier in their hands after weaning, for example, to fall asleep, as the object remains a reassuring reference point for the child.
Silicone is, of course, safe for children and is currently the most commonly used material for manufacturing pacifiers or bottle nipples.
The weaning teat is currently available in a classic version, glow-in-the-dark and in color.
The principle is simple: by adding collars, the suction tip becomes shorter and shorter, which gradually makes it more difficult to use. Thus, by the third or even fourth collar, the child has to hold it to avoid losing it. To use their hands, they are forced to remove the pacifier from their mouth on their own. They therefore use it less and less at each stage, and weaning occurs gradually and gently. Discover our article: What is the Clipp® pacifier, and how does it work?
Currently, there is a single size suitable for children aged 2 and up. In case of gag reflexes before 3 years old, it is possible to add a collar to reduce the suction tip (see instructions for use).
The product was developed by a dental orthotist with over 20 years of specialization in orthodontics, pediatric dentistry (for younger patients), and dentofacial orthopedics (jaw positioning). While not widely known, dental orthotists create custom medical devices for orthodontists, who are specialists in tooth and jaw positioning. The dentist is a dental care professional more adept at relieving and repairing cavities or more serious oral infections, as well as fitting dental prosthetics (restorations).
The teat itself is made of silicone and polypropylene, and the weaning flanges are made of Tritan. The entire set is CE certified and BPA-free.
The Clipp® device is predominantly French! Apart from the basic teat, which is German-made for reliability reasons, the rest is 100% French: the inventor, the development, the weaning collars, the graphic design, the marketing, the packaging, quality control, and shipping. Moreover, beyond the public interest nature of Clipp® and to contribute to a solidarity economy, we work with a French assisted work establishment (ESAT) that allows people recognized as disabled workers to engage in professional activity.
Delivery
Yes, the Clipp® device is available internationally.
Delivery fees in mainland France for one device are currently €6.95 with home delivery with signature or €5.90 without home delivery with signature. Home delivery without signature is free for two kits or more (or €39). Home delivery with signature is free for orders over €49.
Products are generally shipped by post within a maximum of 24 hours, excluding weekends and public holidays. Therefore, you can typically expect to receive your order within less than a week. This period may extend to up to 15 days depending on the delivery location and time of year.
Usage
The risk is not having “too many Clipps,” but rather giving access to other pacifiers. Even with multiple Clipps, the child understands that they only have one type of authorized pacifier. You can explain simply: “You have several Clipps to accompany you, but they are all the same special pacifiers.”
You can certainly have several Clipps with different colors or fasteners. This won’t confuse your child as long as the message remains the same: “All these pacifiers are Clipp pacifiers; they are the only ones allowed now.” This way, the child maintains a clear and reassuring framework.
Yes, it can be useful to have several Clipp pacifiers for the same child, especially if you travel a lot. The idea is not to multiply pacifiers, but to avoid stress in case of forgetting or losing one. Keep 1 “main” pacifier and 1 or 2 spares, with the same rules everywhere.
For Clipp to work, one condition is absolutely essential: remove all “normal” pacifiers before starting. Your child should only have access to their Clipp pacifier. It is this exclusivity that allows them to understand that something has changed and that makes weaning effective.
Yes, it is possible to have a different organization depending on the location: one Clipp pacifier at home, one at the other parent's, one at school or at the childminder's. The essential thing is that the rules are clearly explained and identical everywhere, so that your child understands them and feels safe.
To get a child used to a pacifier, start by offering a weaning pacifier during comforting moments, such as before sleep. Make sure that pacifier use is positive and reassuring, as this will facilitate pacifier weaning at a later stage. With a little patience, your child can get used to their pacifier while preparing the way for successful weaning.
We advise against the use of disinfectant products. If you choose to use them, please take maximum precautions and do not exceed the maximum duration recommended by the manufacturer, otherwise the weaning teat could be weakened.
Do not wash the Clipp® nipple in the dishwasher or disinfect it in a pressure cooker. There is a risk of material damage from detergents or uneven heating.
One kit is enough; if the child previously used multiple pacifiers, having only one Clipp® pacifier is already a step towards weaning. This way, they use it less, as only one is available. Ideally, it stays in the bedroom during the day. If possible, its use should be limited to naps, nights, and major distress; in any case, the child will use it less and less with the addition of the rings.
The nipple is designed to withstand boiling water, but to avoid any risk of deterioration, we recommend simply washing it with hot water.
It's important to adapt to the child, but without losing sight of the goal. The approach is flexible depending on the child and their level of dependence. Clipp has weaned children in less than a week, others in 60 days; the timeframe varies greatly depending on the child's willingness to stop. Listening is important, as they somewhat guide the approach to follow. Don't hesitate to download the fun calendar to plan, with the child, the dates for adding the flanges and thus involve them in their own weaning. The results will be surprising! The child cannot remove a correctly clipped collar; they are held very strongly to the previous one by safety hooks - read the instructions carefully before use.
Yes, it is important to listen to the child and if you deem it necessary to slow down, then slow down! Listening is important; it is somewhat up to the child to guide the process. Do not hesitate to download the fun calendar to plan, with the child, the dates for adding the collars and thus involve them in their own weaning... the results will be surprising! Discover our article: How to introduce the clipp pacifier to your child so that they wean quickly?
Weaning is the process of helping a child break a habit. It happens naturally as they progress through the stages because the pacifier will become increasingly difficult to use. The child gradually reduces its use until complete weaning. Read our article: How to introduce the Clipp pacifier to your child so they can wean easily?
Dialogue is important because it will facilitate weaning. If the child is actively involved, that's even better! You can explain it to them, and they can even more or less choose the date for the next step (if reasonable, of course)! It will be much easier for the child to choose to add a collar than to abruptly decide to part with their pacifier. (Fun calendar and certificate available for download on the website). Clipp® is a pacifier like any other at the first stage, which offers the maximum chance that the transition will be accepted by the child, unlike other systems on the market. Subsequently, stages are added by an adult who mechanically shortens the sucking tip at each stage, so the child cannot object. Each stage is done gently and at the child's pace, but going backward is not possible. We strongly recommend involving the child by letting them choose (more or less 😉 the date of adding each next collar, thus they become an active participant in their weaning, and the result is much better (you can download the fun calendar online for free and the reward certificate) Discover video testimonials from our users and the many reviews from individuals and testimonials from healthcare professionals!
You can use a pacifier clip, but be careful: For your child's safety, use a pacifier clip that complies with current regulations (clipp® pacifier clip available in the online store) maximum 22 cm and never extend the pacifier clip.
At the beginning of weaning, the Clipp® pacifier is like any other pacifier. You must therefore remove all your child's pacifiers and replace them with one or more Clipp® weaning pacifiers. By following the instructions for use, you then simply add the weaning flanges gradually over 30 to 60 days. - Read the instructions carefully before use. Discover our blog articles and video testimonials from our users.
We recommend weaning over 30 days (or 60 days if the need is very strong). However, you know your child better than anyone, and you can extend this period if you deem it necessary to slow down. In any case, each step is irreversible, and you are inevitably heading towards a complete cessation. So, take your time, and more precisely, your child's time. Discover our blog articles and video testimonials from our users.
The advantage of Clipp® is that it's a pacifier strictly identical to others at the start of weaning. The transition is then simplified, there's a very high chance that the child will accept it... a transition that is, in any case, simpler than an abrupt stop. If a flange doesn't fit correctly, it is either:
- mispositioned, so you must insert and clip it correctly (see instructions);
- damaged. Discard the device if the flange or at least one of the clips is broken.
This is particularly possible if the weaning process is too rapid or too premature: it must be adapted to the child. Before the age of 3, you should take your time as there is no urgency. The child may have a real need, and for those with a strong addiction, we also recommend slowing down, doubling the recommended time (approximately two months instead of one - see user manual). After the age of 3, the need transforms into a habit, and weaning becomes easier.
Clipp® is a full-size pacifier: it cannot be swallowed, any more than previous versions! Weaning collars must be clipped on by an adult. Once attached, they cannot be removed by the child, thus posing no risk.
Wash the 6 components in hot water before use, then regularly throughout the weaning phase. Do not hesitate to order the small bottle brush sold in the shop, it is perfectly suited.
The Clipp® device is a pacifier first and foremost: let the child use it, in any case the countdown has begun. However, for Clipp®, as for all pacifiers, we recommend trying to limit its use to specific times such as bedtime, naps, or when a child is very upset, for example. Its use should not be systematic, as complete weaning depends on it. For nighttime, feel free to order the "phosphorescent" or "color" model, which glow in the dark to help your child find their pacifier in bed.
The Clipp® device is primarily intended to break bad habits and will only be worn for a few weeks. Dental malpositions are often a consequence of bad habits. Thumb sucking, pacifier use, or other habits can lead to an incorrect tongue position, mouth breathing, and infantile (or primary) swallowing retention. Weaning your child correctly will allow them to adopt good habits, and in the majority of cases, before the age of 3, the dental alignment will naturally correct itself within a few weeks. If in doubt, do not hesitate to consult a specialist.
Clipp® is particularly well-suited for pacifier weaning. For thumb sucking, we recommend discussing it with the child, finding substitutes such as activities requiring both hands, and potentially supplementing with a bitter nail polish and/or a bandage on the thumb at bedtime.
